Amazon.com Conceived by the French director Adrian Maben as "an anti-Woodstock film," Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii was shot in October 1971 in a vacant, 2,000-year-old amphitheater--a venue chosen to accentuate the grandeur and spaciousness of the band's Meddle-era music. This disc contains a new, 90-minute director's cut as well as the original 60-minute concert film, whose production and effects feel inescapably dated. Maben's cut goes to great lengths to lend the film a more contemporary feel, but it's the earlier version that makes this disc such a gem, being more focused on the music and more wholistic in vision. The anamorphic, 16:9 director's cut interweaves the Pompeii performances with fascinating but distracting interviews and music snippets filmed later (mostly during the recording of Dark Side of the Moon). The movie was originally prepared in a 4:3 aspect ratio, however, and the widescreen version crops perfectly framed images like the nine-square mosaic of drummer Nick Mason in "One of These Days." The original offers plenty of closeups of fingers on frets and keys, with shots that are often luxuriously long in duration. And the picture quality from Pompeii is revelatory: outstandingly sharp and clear, rich in subtle grades of light and color. Generous extras include everything from original posters, reviews, bootleg album covers, and song lyrics to a 24-minute interview with Maben. But for all the director's talk of the glorious acoustics in Pompeii's amphitheater, there's little natural ambience to be heard. The Dolby Digital 2.0 sound is clear, dry, and two-dimensional, though notably better than any previous video release. --Michael Mikesell

PINK FLOYD LIVE AT POMPEII August 5, 2010 Andrew THE DIRECTORS CUT IS FILLED WITH A STRANGE MIX OF OLD & CHEAP COMPUTER MADE ANIMATIONS, LOOK FOR THE ORIGINAL VERSION, NEVERTHELESS A GREAT DVD!!!
Great film, lousy release July 15, 2010 P. J. Nelson (Metro MN, USA) I think by far the best version of this film was the 1974 theatrical release, which included scenes from the making of Dark Side of the Moon at Abbey Road Studios. The 2003 director's cut (the only version available on DVD) is a terribly jarring and distracting cut, with goof-ball space cartoons randomly tossed in continually throughout the original performance.
The only saving grace is that it includes the original 1972 film under the "features" section. The director's cut is NOT worth watching.
I can only hope and pray that they will eventually release this on blu-ray, and when they do, include a remastered version of both the 1972 and 1974 films.
Don't Bother With The Director's Cut July 4, 2010 Jennifer The only reason I had the courtesy to give the DVD three stars was because the original concert film was included. (The original film of which, deserves MORE than five stars!)
Sure, the interviews with the band and the studio footage were all very interesting, but I think they should have been added as bonus features. NOT part of the film. It just completely ruined the whole eerie and haunting mood of the film. Also the corny "spacy" images being intercut during the songs was just really pointless. Pink Floyd has always been trying to shake the "space rock" stereotype, but Maben did absolutely nothing to help play down this image.
In fact, just one minute into the director's cut and I was tired of it. We hardly get to see the band at all while they perform "Echoes." Even though Pink Floyd has tried to remain mostly anonymous throughout their career, I think watching them perform is the best part. I hardly got to see them at all.
At the end of the movie, I did not feel like it was a haunting and wonderful experience, rather I felt like I had been ripped off. How could Adrian take the best concert film and "cut" it so horribly?
You're probably thinking "How much of a difference could there possibly be?" I, too, thought the same when purchasing this product. But, when I compared the original to the cut version I saw a LARGE, and not very positive, difference.
Anyway, long review short, if you want to experience "Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii", which, if you are a Floyd fan, I suggest you do, you are only experiencing it the "right" way, if you're watching the original. Not the "Director's Cut."
And that's the way the cookie crumbles. I'm Jennifer Childers, goodnight!
awesome June 24, 2010 boone's momma (Charlotte NC USA) It is the best Pink Floyd experience I have ever had. Just sit back and be thoroughly entertained.
Pink Floyd at their most creative! June 15, 2010 James S. Clawson (Gwynn's Island, VA USA) The video and sound quality of this DVD is superb. It is hard to believe that this was recorded and filmed in 1971 and shows the attention to detail both the director and the band put towards the original performance. The director's cut version is great because you get to see some "behind the scenes" interview with the original band members. The performance versions of their classic songs in my opinion are even better that the studio versions. Of course if you like Pink Floyd then you already know that Echoes in epic, but the performance versions of Careful With That Axe Eugene, Saucerful of Secrets and Set The Controls For The Heart of The Sun are incrediable. I highly recommend this DVD to any Pink Floyd enthusiast. I'm just sorry it took me so long to discover it.
