The question facing any viewer of the Japanese CG feature Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is: do you have to know the games on which it's based in order to understand the film? And the answer is: it certainly helps. But even complete novices (i.e., most parents) in the Final Fantasy world will find some entertainment in its wealth of fantasy-based action, and the animation never fails to astonish. Picking up two years after an epic battle between the forces of good (represented by brooding soldier Cloud) and evil (Cloud's former general, Sephiroth), FFVII opens in the devastated city of Midgard, whose youthful occupants suffer from a ghastly disease known as Geostigma. A trio of brothers arrives with what appears to be a cure for the plague, but their gesture conceals a more sinister purpose: to revive Sephiroth and bring about the end of the world. Cloud and his companions must once again rise to the occasion to stop the siblings and the revived Sephiroth from unleashing total destruction. Complex and self-referential to the point of occasional incomprehension, Final Fantasy VII will definitely be most appreciated by fans of the game series, but if others can look past the numbing dialogue and frenetic action (which is a bit too intense for very young children), the film offers a carefree and action-packed viewing experience. The two-disc set contains the original Japanese language version of the film as well as an English-dubbed edition (Rachel Leigh Cook and Christy Carlson Romano, among others, provide the vocal talent) and a version edited for the Venice Film Festival. A 30-minute featurette that recaps the Final Fantasy story up to VII, as well as a making-of documentary, deleted scenes, and promotions for future Final Fantasy VII games and products round out the extras. --Paul Gaita

4 out of 5 stars Final Fantasy VII:Advent Children........................   August 20, 2010
blackaciddevil (in the USA somewhere.....)
Final Fantasy VII:Advent Children, for those of you who don't know, continues the story that began in Final Fantasy VII(a roleplaying game on the original Playstation). It takes place two years after the events of the game and set in a new city called Edge. Two years since Cloud Strife defeated Sephiroth, who summoned a meteor that attempted to devastate the planet, but only destroyed the city of Midgar. It focuses on Cloud who is a delivery boy now living alongside Tifa Lockhart and taking care of two kids. Cloud is summoned to find the cause of "Geostigma", a disease that's dangerous to the city's population. At first, he refuses. Yet, eventually comes around. A trio of brothers arrives with what appears to be a cure for the stigma, but they conceal a more sinister plot. That plot is to revive Sephiroth and bring about the end of the world. Before long, Cloud picks up arms(or should I say, sword) and heads into battle to stop the brothers. That's how it all starts to come to a frenetic finish.

Do you have to have played and know the game on which it's based in order to understand what's going on in the movie, as mentioned in the editorial review? The answer ot that is,at least in my humble opinion, yes and no. Course, not dissing FF7(mind you), its' story is pretty out there...if you've played, practically, every game in the series. Wait, scratch that....it's story is(ahem) complex. Lol. At any rate, like the editorial review said, it does help(although you really don't need it). Those who hadn't played the game probably won't show much interest in the movie but they'd be missing a good...nay, great Sci-fi movie.

What do I think of the movie? It's absolutely stunning. Way better than Final Fantasy:The Spirits Within, for sure. The action will, definitely, keep you on the edge of your seat.
It worth adding to your collection whether you're a gamer or a Sci-fi fan. I highly recommend it.

However, I don't understand why Square didn't decide to make this story into a game. Fans have clamoring for more Cloud since they finished FF7 years ago. That's pretty evident considering how they've been pushing Square to 'remake' FF7 on our current console systems. I imagine there's alot of people saying the same thing I am. Yet, I'm satisfied with what we've received from Square.

Gripe? Not a one. If you read most of my reviews, you know that hardly ever happens. I usually got one gripe. Alas, I have none.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children rules.

This product was brand new, great quality! Even better was the price for a blu-ray! Especially one that is highly coveted by Final Fantasy fans. This product would usually be much more expensive.

The product came in on time and the movie is great, I would have given it 5 stars if the box cover came in black like they advertised.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie!   June 22, 2010

I will never regret buying this epic movie! The graphics are insane and the story line just tells you what kind of company Square Enix is: An excellent company that spends several years creating intensely epic story lines that will not falter in years to come!
