Japanese style two tiered lunchbox with cloth elastic band to keep your lunchbox securely closed. This laquered plastic Japanese lunchbox measures 5 1/2 inches long by 4 inches wide and when stacked measures 3 1/8 inches high. The bottom tray measures 1 1/2 inches deep, the plastic covered top tray measures 1 1/4 inches deep and has a 2 compartment mini tray to hold pickles. The laquered lid has a nice simple cherry blossom design. Hand wash in warm soapy water, the elastic band can be hand washed as well.

When I first received this box, I was pleased with how it was packaged, but a bit surprised at it's size. It's pretty small! (It's only about 5 1/2 inches long, 4 inches wide, and 3 1/4 inches deep.) This is my first bento. I've been doing some reading about them on the web, but had never seen one up close. Still, everything I read said that, if tightly packed, the amount of ml equals the approximate amount of calories it will hold. For example, this box held about 600 ml of water when I checked it so it really will hold a decent amount of food, but you will need to pack it tightly. I also wish the clear plastic lid inside fit a bit more snug. You won't be packing soup in this bento! Still, I am pleased with it's looks and function. I've been using this for my lunch at work. We all agree that this is soooo much prettier that the disposable plastic ware I was using before! It really forces me to actually THINK about what I'm going to eat at lunch and not just eat "whatever" or work through my lunch because I feel I'm just "too busy". I have not tried this in the microwave or dishwasher. I've been using it for food that does not require reheating and have been hand washing.

I was surprised how early I got it. But I would have to say it was worth it. Its so cute, and it looks like it can hold a decent amount. I don't even know what I should put in it as a first lunch.

At first you might think this is too small. I have several bento boxes of different sizes (I live in Tokyo). When I first started buying Bento boxes, I bought only the larger sizes. But I have discovered that the smaller Bento boxes can carry a great deal of food.
You aren't going to fit 2 cups of spaghetti, 4 slices of garlic bread and 6 cups of salad into one of these. But I have found that i really don't need all that food. I put salad into the top part of the bento, and rice with bite sized pieces of vegetables and meat in the other part of the Bento.
Because I'm trying to lose weight, I eat the salad first, and often find that the rice is too much and don't finish it.
Japanese Bento boxes are a great way to maintain portion control and get lot's of flavors in your meal.
